CLASSES FOR INTERNATIONAL TEACHING ASSISTANTS
EAP 4830 – Spoken English for ITAs
The goal of this course is to enhance the oral/aural communication skills pertinent to ITA experience. The course emphasizes practice and training in speaking American English appropriate for university classrooms, as well as development of cultural and interpersonal language skills necessary for performing duties as a teaching assistant.
EAP 4830 is recommended for international teaching assistants with a speak score of 40 or below.
EAP 4831 – Advanced Spoken English for ITAs
In this course, students will develop speaking and language skills necessary for instruction in a university classroom. The instructor emphasizes content-specific varieties of American English as well as practice in conversational management required for instruction.
EAP 4831 is recommended for international teaching assistants with a speak score of 45 or above.
EAP 4832 - Pronunciation for ITAs
This course is designed to help students improve pronunciation and speaking skills so they can become more competent and confident speakers of English. This course will also help students develop an awareness of specific pronunciation features that are the most difficult for them.
EAP 4832 is open to any international teaching assistant who is willing to improve their pronunciation, regardless of their score.
If a student has not taken the SPEAK test or any of the ITA classes, it is recommended that they take EAP 4830. He/she can also contact Dr. Maria B. Mendoza for help selecting the appropriate class.
EAP 5860 - Advanced English Practice for International Educators
This is an orally based individualized course in English as a second language, designed to provide practice in diagnosed problem areas for advanced students.
The classes are offered every semester and are listed in the Department of Middle and Secondary Education in the College of Education.
